When one player has gone out or when there are no more cards in the draw pile and the next player can’t or won’t pick the discard pile, the round is over and points are scored for both teams.
For going out, a player scores 100 points, going out concealed gives a special bonus of 100 points. (To go out concealed, a player must not have previously melded or added to their partner’s melds and they must be able to put down a complete canasta. They may do so after picking up the discard pile.) Next, points are counted for finished canastas.
To make counting easier, canastas are already marked as natural (red) or mixed (black) by putting a red or black card on top of the pile when the meld is assembled in a stack to mark that the canasta is finished. Natural canastas give 500 points, mixed canastas 300 points.
After counting points for the canastas, points are awarded or subtracted for red 3s laid out on the table. Provided the team has made at least an initial meld, each red 3 gives +100 points.
When a team has all four red 3s, they score a bonus of +400 points, which gives +800 points in total for all red 3s. These values are penalties if a team hasn’t succeeded to meld at all, and need to be counted negative. If a player still has a red 3 in their hand, their team gets a penalty of -500 points.
Finally, all other cards are counted. The points scored at the end are the same as counted for the meld requirements; melded cards are scored plus, cards in the hands are subtracted:
Black 3s 5 points each
4, 5, 6, 7, 5 points each
8, 9, 10, J, Q, K 10 points each
Ace 20 points each
2 20 points each
Joker 50 points each
The team that is first to reach more than 5000 points (unless stated differently in the table rules) has won. This can be achieved in only one round, but usually several rounds are necessary before one team wins. A team can have a negative score.
